Sloan's Lake

According to legend, farmer Thomas M. Sloan struck an underground water source in 1861 while digging an irrigation well, and the lake grew to about 200 acres overnight. Manhattan Beach amusement park opened on the north shore in 1891, and the neighborhood today runs from 17th to 29th Avenue between Federal and Sheridan boulevards.
